IMPORTANT: GRADES

I have not finished grading your portfolios.  Please do not make a trip to school to get your grade sheet as they will not be ready yet.  I will have them for you on Monday, May 16, in the English Department Office (526 MT).

Your Portfolios

There are going to be two parts of this post:  your final grade requirements and putting together your portfolio. 

1.  Final Grade Requirements:  All late work had to be completed and turned in on Friday, May 5.  I will still accept late blog assignments through Wednesday, May 11, 11 p.m. 

All portfolio folders must be turned in by NOON on Wednesday, May 11.  I will spend Thursday reading and posting final grades.  On Friday, May 13, I will be in my office, in 222 MT,  from 10-2.  You may pick up your placement sheet from me then.  If you would like to discuss your grade with me, we can do so then.

2. Your Final Portfolio:  This hotlink will open up to an explanation. 

For Friday

For those of you who attended the march on Monday--I will not count that as an official absence.  I hope that the event sparks some writing in your blogs--I'd love to read more about it.

Because of so many of you were absent, I have pushed back the deadline for your portfolios to next Monday or Wednesday, respectively.  Eight a.m. students will be expected to show up at 8 on Monday in HU 313; 9:30 students will be expected to show up at 8 a.m. on Wednesday.  After you've completed your portfolio, I would like for you to fill out a questionnaire about blogging (for my coursework) and a course evaluation. 

YOU MUST HAND DELIVER YOUR PORTFOLIO TO ME IN PERSON.  DO NOT PUT IT IN THE BOX NEXT TO MY OFFICE--PORTFOLIOS HAVE BEEN STOLEN FROM THERE, AND STUDENTS HAVE HAD TO REDO THEIR WORK BECAUSE OF IT.

Concerning Your Final Grade:

1.  Any make up work that you owe me must be turned in on Friday, May 5.

2.  I will release your final grade once you have turned in your portfolio and I've graded it.

3.  I will be in my office on Friday, May 12, from 10-2 p.m. to hand out your GRADE SHEETS and to discuss your final grades.  If you are unable to meet with me, you can pick up your grade sheet in MT 526, the English Department Office. 

For Friday:

Bring to class whichever papers you are working on, and I will be available to advise you.  You may also use that time to visit the Writing Center to meet with a tutor (remember:  each revision includes a Writing Center visit).

ALL OF YOU must send me an email draft of your cover letter by Sunday night.  15 points. I will read them and send you advice for revision.

On Friday, I will bring in a very specific list of what goes into your portfolio.

Monday

Since many of you were absent today due to the immigration march downtown, we spent class going over grammar and  assignments and doing make-up work.  On Wednesday, we'll read the two sample portfolios.

I've pushed the deadlines forward, so the portfolios will be due on Monday, May 8, for my 8 a.m. class and Wednesday , May 10, for the 9:30 crowd.

If you want to write about the  march for your blog entry, go ahead.  I'd love to hear what it was like, and I'm sure others would as well.

Weekend Assignment

One of the best things about blogging is the chance we have to give each other great links to other sites that we've found while surfing the internet.

By Wednesday, I would like for you to have posted a link to your blog in which you name the site and hotlink it (ask me for instructions if you need to know how to hotlink).  Then, write a four -sentence post on why you like this site and what you think others would enjoy about it. 

The site can be on anything from parenting, to immigration, to music, dance, art, sports and gaming.  Have fun with it!

ICE: A How-To Guide For Friday

As promised, here is a guide for the in-class essay which you will be writing on Friday during class. Go to the column on the left and open the link called "ICE:  A How-To Guide For Friday."

Monday's Elaboration

As promised, here's the assignment for Wednesday. 

1. Please read pp. 338 --40 and do the exercise.  In class we discussed how coordinating and subordinating clauses were used to structure ideas within a sentence.  This activity will give you some practice.

2.   Go over all of your writing in your portfolio. Refamilarize yourself with what you have done over the span of three months.  If any particular assignment looks like it would make a good example for your essay, put a sticky note on it. 

3.  Finally, scan the list of bloggers on the right.  Pick two other bloggers to read and visit their blogs, leaving a comment of about three-four sentences for each.  10 points total.

April 23: Weekly Plans

Please read the essay on 300-307.  We will be going over both versions of the draft in preparation for your draft of your in-class essay on Friday. 

Homework TBA.

On Wednesday, we'll go over the homework and develop your ideas for the essay. 

On Friday, you'll have an hour to write your essay.  We'll do a quick review of homework first.

Assignment for April 19

I will not be in class today, but you are expected to do the following by Friday, April 21:

Go to the MT Computer Writing Center (room 020), and do two units in Skillsbank:

1.  In Skillsbank IV, Writing:  Go to Sentence Structure and do all of the activities.  Print out your scores for  the two quizzes and the test.

2.  In Skillsbank IV, Language: Go to Punctuation and do sections 5-11 on commas.  Also, do the two Practice activities on for commas.  Print out the results and send them to me.

On Friday, be sure to bring your two paragraphs (see below) and make sure that you have read and done the assignment for April 10, which asked you to read and do all of the exercises on pp.285-293.

Here is why doing all of this is important:

While we have been working on understanding clauses and sentence patterns, we haven't completely reviewed punctuating them.  The Skillsbank work will help you understand where to put commas within sentences.  The Sentence Structure section will give you some review of ideas from the beginning of the semester and connect them to the sentence pattern work we're now doing.

The readings in the textbook are examples of essays, and we're going to pour over them as writers who read other writers' work to learn about putting things together.

Homework For Monday, April 17

First of all, finish the weekend's homework.

Then, move on to:

A. Read pp. 517-527 and do exercise 1 on 518, 3 on 524 and 4 on 527.  30 points.

B. Write two rough draft paragraphs about how your writing has changed over the semester.  Think about how your study habits have changed, about using the computer for word-processing and blogging, and about learning about grammar. 

Do some freewriting, and then pick the most important topics to develop, one per paragraph.

If you get stuck, write anything about your writing and bring it in.  On time.  30 points!
